Mark Gilligan FBIPP LRPS is an internationally renowned photographer, especially for his distinctive dramatic landscape images of this area.
A proud recipient of many prestigious awards,
the British Institute of Professional Photography made him a ‘Fellow’ of that organisation, the highest in the industry, as a result of his body of work on ‘Wast Water.’
As well as being a regular features writer and photographer for ‘Lake District Life,’ Lancashire Life’ and ‘The Cumbrian,’ magazines he also runs his own Landscape Photography Courses that are based here at ‘The Strands’.
He enjoys running the popular workshops and for many years he was also the national director and lead trainer for the specialist surveillance photography and video training organised for the Police Service.
No stranger to television and video production either, he has written and directed many programmes for broadcast and commercial delivery.
His work around here is his passion though!
Mark and Lesley quickly invited him to exhibit his unique work here and this year they are opening a purpose built, dedicated gallery at ‘The Strands’ to exhibit and showcase his special photographs that have been described as ‘one of the finest examples in European photography.’

“I love this area and in particular the many moods that Wast Water has to offer. I dare anyone to venture around its magnificent perimeter and not experience its diverse and wonderful views. Irrespective of the weather!
You can literally feel the light changes creating a new vista with each step you take. For me, this particular part of ‘the lakes’ has its own distinctive beauty and I never tire of walking around here and capturing what ‘the light throws at us’.
